Mombasa

is Kenya’s historic coastal port

Welcome to Mombasa

Where Swahili Culture Meets the Ocean

Mombasa is Kenya’s second-largest city and its main port, built on an island in the Indian Ocean. Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the narrow streets of the Old Town show centuries of Swahili, Arab and Portuguese influence. The beaches at Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu are a short drive away.

We combine Mombasa with the south coast at Diani, the north coast at Watamu and Malindi, and safaris in Tsavo and Amboseli.

Things to do in Mombasa

Mombasa and the south coast: Swahili Beach Resort, Diani Beach, Kenya

Explore Fort Jesus, a sixteenth-century Portuguese fort and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then wander the Old Town to see carved Swahili doors, spice shops and old mosques. You can also visit Haller Park, a nature park built on a former quarry, to see giraffes, hippos and crocodiles.

Best time to visit

Mombasa is hot and humid all year. The best weather comes from December to March and again from July to October, when rainfall is lowest.

How to get there

Moi International Airport serves Mombasa, and the Standard Gauge Railway also links the city with Nairobi in about five hours.
