Itinerary
Governors' Il Moran is one of a collection of 'Governors' safari camps located in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Il Moran Safari Camp is small, intimate and pleasantly plush. Located within the National Reserve’s Musiara Sector, the camp is surrounded by a steady stream of wildlife and scenic views. The camp's ten very large luxury safari tents are tucked away amidst ancient trees deep in the forest lining the winding Mara River. The camp is traditional and permanent in nature, but blends in comfortably with its surroundings. Local wildlife is so at ease with the peaceful safari camp that you may occasionally see a giraffe or elephant strolling through camp. At night you’ll hear a local pod of hippo’s grunting in the darkness.
The camp's main communal area is tastefully furnished with dark chunky wooden tables, oversized blue couches, a colourfully beaded chandelier, African artefacts and tribal portraits. All decorations are an interesting mixture of contemporary meets traditional design. The entire communal area was recently raised and now sits on raised wooden decking. Fresh and appetising candle-lit dinners are served by waiters in the main dining tent overlooking the river below. Cooked breakfasts and lunches are generally served outdoors by the trees. In the evenings the fire pit is lit and you can enjoy one of your favourite drinks in the warm glow of its flames. The camp's staff is very attentive and their personal approach to customer service is aimed at making your stay extra special. The central common area also includes a cosy and comfy lounge area and bar, perfect for having a drink before dinner or after an invigorating safari. The lounge features clusters of comfortable sofas scattered with cushions accompanied by cowhide armchairs. Out on the wooden viewing deck overlooking the river you can settle into a wicker chair as you look out over the river.
Il Moran's ten spacious safari tents have recently been refurbished and have a noticeably light and airy feel to them due to the use of neutral tones of beige and greys. Each tent is furnished with a hand-carved king-sized olive-wood bed (made locally from reclaimed wood), a heavy wooden writing desk with copper lamp and a large comfy sofa. Floors are covered with heavy carpets and cowhides. The tents have large en-suite bathrooms separated from the bedroom by zip-up flaps. The bathrooms are equipped with twin washbasins, hot- and cold running water, lovely large walk-in showers and a freestanding claw-foot bathtub with shower attachment. The tents also have electric lamps, camera and mobile phone charging and plenty of African artefacts to enhance the safari atmosphere. The tents are set up upon large concrete stone plinths and fully mosquito proofed. On the front side of the tent lies a private verandah with wicker chairs and a hammock for lounging in. The tent has a generator that’s always running and which allows for charging of batteries and mobile phones.
During the length of your stay you will have an opportunity to head out on up to three extended 4x4 game drives each day. The game drives are conducted within the Masai Mara National Reserve, not far from your safari camp. Most game drives take place in the national reserve’s Musiara Sector across Paradise Plain and up to Rhino Ridge. From the moment you step into the safari vehicle you’ll have a chance to spot wildlife from all angles. Il Moran's well-trained driver-guides will make sure you don’t miss any wildlife that passes by. If you wish you can choose to extend an early morning game drive to include a packed bush breakfast in a scenic location. Bush breakfasts generally include a good selection of cereals, fruit, fresh pastries and bread and the option to have a full breakfast cooked to order. Game drives also take place in the late afternoon. For an extra special safari adventure, you can choose to book a hot-air balloon ride at an extra cost.
