Masai Mara

is the heart of Kenya’s safari country

Welcome to Masai Mara

Big Cats and the Great Migration

The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s best-known safari destination, with big cats, elephants, buffalo and wide open plains. Between about July and October the Great Migration brings wildebeest and zebra across the Mara River from the Serengeti. Private conservancies such as Mara North offer quieter game drives and walking safaris.

We plan safari stays in the Mara by road or by flight from Nairobi, and can add a hot air balloon flight over the plains.

Things to do in Masai Mara

Masai Mara safari: hot air balloons rising over the Masai Mara at sunrise

Go on game drives to see lions, leopards, elephants and cheetahs on the open plains. Then watch wildebeest cross the Mara River during the Great Migration, which usually runs from July to October. You can also take a sunrise hot air balloon flight, or visit a Maasai village to learn about local culture.

Best time to visit

The dry months from June to October offer the best wildlife viewing, because animals gather near the rivers. January and February are also drier and quieter.

How to get there

Daily flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport reach the Mara’s airstrips in about 45 minutes. The road journey, meanwhile, takes five to six hours.
