Best Time to Visit Zanzibar: Month-by-Month Guide

Zanzibar is a year-round island, but the month you choose can change your holiday completely. Pick the wrong one and you may find yourself in heavy rain, or on a beach where the sea has drained away to the horizon at low tide. Pick the right one and you get warm turquoise water, soft white sand and long sunny days. This month-by-month guide explains what to expect, which coast suits each season and how to balance weather, crowds and price.

Quick answer: the best time to visit Zanzibar

The best months are June to October, when it is dry, sunny and less humid, and December to February, when it is hotter but still mostly dry. The wettest period is the long rains from mid-March to May, and shorter showers usually arrive in November. If you want the most reliable weather for a beach holiday, aim for July to September or January to February.

Zanzibar’s seasons at a glance

Zanzibar sits just south of the equator, so temperatures stay warm all year. Daytime highs typically range from about 27 to 33 degrees Celsius, and the sea stays comfortably warm for swimming. What changes is rainfall, humidity and wind.

  • June to October: dry, sunny and slightly cooler, with lower humidity and a steady breeze.
  • December to February: hot, sunny and drier, with higher humidity and the warmest sea.
  • Mid-March to May: the long rains, with heavy downpours, high humidity and fewer visitors.
  • November: the short rains, usually brief showers that clear quickly.

January and February: hot, bright and ideal for swimming

These are among the hottest months, with plenty of sunshine and calm seas that suit snorkelling and diving. Humidity is higher than in the middle of the year, so expect to spend more time in the pool and the shade. Kitesurfers head to the southeast coast when the wind picks up, and the whole island feels lively. Book early if your dates include the New Year period, as it is one of the busiest times of the year.

March to May: the long rains

The long rains bring heavy showers, often in the afternoon or overnight, with some days of continuous rain, especially in April and May. The island turns lush and green, prices fall and beaches are quiet, but sea conditions can be rougher and some smaller properties close for the season. If your dates are fixed in this period, choose a hotel with good indoor facilities and keep your plans flexible. Early March and late May can be a pleasant compromise.

June to October: the sweet spot

This is the classic window for a Zanzibar beach holiday. Skies are clear, days are warm rather than sticky, and rainfall is low. July and August are the busiest months and prices reflect that, so many travellers prefer June, September or October, which offer similar weather with fewer crowds. These months also coincide with the migration season in Kenya and northern Tanzania, which makes them ideal for combining a safari with a beach.

November and December: short rains and festive cheer

November brings short, sharp showers rather than all-day rain, and it is often good value. By December the weather settles and the island fills up for the festive season. Christmas and New Year are peak periods, so reserve flights and rooms early.

Which coast is best for your travel month?

Zanzibar’s coasts behave very differently, and tides matter as much as the month.

  • The east coast (Kiwengwa, Bwejuu): wide, white beaches with a large tidal range. At low tide the sea retreats a long way, so plan swimming around the tide table. Look at TUI BLUE Bahari Zanzibar or Diamonds Mapenzi at Kiwengwa, or Baraza Resort & Spa at Bwejuu.
  • The southeast coast: quieter and more secluded, ideal for couples and a slower pace, with options such as Zawadi Hotel.
  • The north (Nungwi): sheltered water that is usually swimmable at most tides, which makes it a safe bet in any season. Sandies Baobab Beach is based in Nungwi.

Things to do by season

  • Kitesurfing and water sports: the windier months, roughly June to September and January to February, are the most popular.
  • Snorkelling and diving: best when the sea is calm and clear, which usually means the dry months.
  • Reef experiences: the Zanzibar Submarine Classic Reef Tour is a relaxed way to see marine life without getting wet.
  • Spice tours and Stone Town: easiest in the dry months, when streets and farm paths are dry underfoot.
  • Jozani Forest and dolphin trips: both are available through the year, with dry weather making the walks more comfortable.

Prices and crowds by month

Peak season runs through July and August and from late December to early January, when rates are highest and the best rooms go first. June, September, October and February are shoulder months that combine good weather with fair prices. April and May are the lowest-priced months, with attractive deals for travellers who do not mind some rain. Whatever the season, booking early gives you the widest choice of rooms and flights.

Getting to Zanzibar from Nairobi

Flights from Nairobi to Zanzibar take roughly an hour and a half to two hours, which makes the island an easy add-on to a Kenyan or Tanzanian safari. A classic plan is a few days on safari in the Masai Mara or the Serengeti, followed by a week on the beach. Check passport or ID requirements before you travel, as entry rules can change, and carry printed copies of your bookings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest month to visit Zanzibar?

April and May are usually the lowest-priced months because of the long rains. If you want better weather at a lower price, look at early June, late September and October.

What is the best month for a honeymoon in Zanzibar?

September and October offer warm, dry weather with fewer crowds than July and August. February is another strong choice for hot, sunny days.

Is Zanzibar worth visiting in the rainy season?

It can be, if you are flexible and happy with a quieter island. Rain often falls in bursts rather than all day, and the countryside is at its greenest. Be aware that the sea can be rougher and some venues close.

How many days do I need in Zanzibar?

Five to seven nights is ideal for a beach stay, with a day or two in Stone Town. Add extra nights if you plan to dive, kitesurf or tour the spice farms.
